Licensing regime

Ofcom has authorised the use of GNSS repeaters in any of the three GNSS frequency bands: 1164-1215 MHz, 1215-1300 MHz, 1559-1610 MHz.  Users can apply for a licence to use a GNSS repeater in a fixed indoor location from the end of July 2012 for a fee of £75. Repeater installations must be compliant to the ETSI EN 302 645 Standard and may include multiple re-radiating elements provided their National Grid Reference location is recorded on the licence. Once the licence is granted they are indefinite and will be allowed to be traded on an outright or concurrent basis. A record of the locations and frequencies of all licensed repeaters will be held by Ofcom for investigation in cases of interference.

Repeaters in your business

GNSS repeaters provide coverage for the use and testing of GNSS technology inside buildings where the GNSS signals do not normally reach. Until the recent decision by Ofcom, the use of this repeater technology in the UK was not permitted except in specialized (normally military) situations.  Large numbers of consumer and industrial products use GNSS technology for positioning and timing applications including smart phones, telematics equipment, avionics and emergency service applications.
